We've Lost Our 14th Trans Sister This Year

It hurts my heart that we have to keep doing this.

Ava Le’Ray Barrin, of Athens, Ga., has become the 14th transgender homicide victim of 2017, and she is also the youngest. She was 17. Seventeen. SEVEN. TEEN. Ridiculous.

She was shot during an altercation in her apartment complex’s parking lot on the morning of June 25, and later died at a local hospital. She was allegedly murdered by another transgender woman, who has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. And for good measure, both Barrin and her alleged murderer were misgendered by Georgia newspapers.

Admittedly, this is one of the first times I can remember seeing a report of a transgender woman being killed by another. But that doesn't change the fact that too many of our sisters are losing their lives in this world. What is it going to take for these lives to be valued?

RIP Ava.
